Spartan Over HTTP
I've just been testing a nice, simple solution for serving my gemtext content over HTTP. It looks very promising. I'll have to spend some time rearranging the directory structure a little bit to make it simpler to maintain going forward. Some of my existing HTML content will live side-by-side with the new Spartan files, because there are a few pages that just make more sense that way.
This bit of magic is made possible by the [gmi to html] PHP code provided by the fine folks at gemini.sensorstation.co.
[gmi to html] (gemini://gemini.sensorstation.co/computing.gemini.gmi-to-html.gmi)
I am hoping to complete the transition before I travel back to Washington next week.
UPDATE: the conversion is complete. π It is possible I'll still discover problems, but all my testing so far looks good. Now http://jdcard.com displays my Spartan index.gmi (converted to HTML). So the same set of gemtext files are now served via Spartan, Gemini, and HTTP. The final step will be removing the .html and .htm files that are sitting side-by-side with .gmi files with the same name, after I set up HTTP redirects for them of course.
Hmmm... I wonder if I want to add Gopher to the mix. I'll need to learn a lot more about Gopher, but some of my content might actually be a good match for it.

The Gemini Server Is Live
I took another look at Gemini server software today and found one that looked like a good choice. It was much simpler to implement than I had imagined.
This is definitely A Good Thing because no matter how much I like Spartan there seems to be a lot more interest in Gemini. It is trivial to serve the same set of gemtext files using both protocols -- it's kind of like getting the second one free.

No Gemini
At least for now I've decided not to install a Gemini server on jdcard.com. Setting up a Gemini server without root access to the host is more complex than I want to deal with now.
I had decided to figure out how to install the security certificates, which had been the other factor that kept me from setting up Gemini. The main reason I chose Spartan was exactly these kinds of complexities.
I will try to sync the files from jdcard.com to the tilde.team server from time to time, but I don't intend to set up an automated sync. Again, too much complexity.
